What caused the YouTube and Gmail outage
Google services including YouTube, Gmail, docs, etc. were down on Monday (Dec 14). Users from around the world reported that they were not able to access their Gmail and YouTube accounts.
As most of the people working from home, this outage impact them a lot and made people realize how much they depend on google services and technology in general during these times.
As of Dec 14 4:32, PST Google mentioned that the system affected was restored and all services recovered shortly afterward.
“As per Google, the root cause of the outage was due to an issue in their automated quota management system which reduced capacity for Google’s central identity management system, causing it to return errors globally. As a result, Google couldn’t verify that user requests were authenticated and served errors to users.”
The year 2020 has seen outages across all the major cloud providers like AWS, Azure, and GCP due to the increased volume of traffic in the pandemic and other human errors. Hope cloud providers implement a failover strategy and high resiliency system in place to prevent these kinds of issues in the future.
